Before-School Book Clubs
Our before-school breakfast book club is a fun and interactive time. Students engage with culturally diverse literature which is the crux of our program. The characters look like them and the themes are relatable. The conversations are dynamic!
In 1990, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop published an essay about the importance of providing young readers with diverse books that reflect the “multicultural nature of the world” in which we live.
When books don’t serve as mirrors to children, Bishop says, “They learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in society.”
In addition to studying diverse books, in our program each student is given the book at the end of the study to build their own home library.
