Our Story

In the fall of 2021, the our country and more importantly our students were in the middle of a pandemic. Schools were closed and kids were struggling to learn through online instruction. The phrase "learning loss" which was an educational industry term became the lead story for everyone. The question everyone was asking was, "how do we get students back on grade level after being out of a traditional school setting for 2 years"?

WE, determined the place to start was reading literacy.

If a child is not reading at grade level by fourth grade, they are statistically likely to remain illiterate throughout their life. Not only do struggling readers experience higher levels of stress and feelings of isolation during their school years, but they also have a dramatically increased chance of dropping out of high school and entering the criminal justice system -known as the school to prison pipeline.

Since school day instruction was focusedon basic literacy skills, students who can read, even if below grade level, don’t haveopportunities for more advanced intervention. So the P2R was Book Club style reading intervention was born.

Our before school book club became the opportunity for our students to interact with books in a new way. The materials we use are highly engaging, which all kids to make personal connections to the materials they read.

The P2R Book Club equips students by turning them into readers. As important as astudent’s ability to read and comprehend texts is whether a student enjoys reading. We believethat literacy builds self-esteem. Readers who struggle are more likely to have difficultyexpressing themselves—even verbally. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and negative social behaviors.

The more able a person is to express themselves, the greater their confidence andtheir sense of self. Reading also offers students mirrors and windows: a chance to see themselvesin the pages of a story and a chance to understand new perspectives.

Reading with Relevance

Reading with Relevance is an evidence-based program that guides students and educators through the process of reading culturally relevant, socially and emotionally rich literature. The curriculum breaks high-interest diverse books into a series of thoughtful lesson plans.

Each lesson is designed to support educators to explore the social and emotional themes of the day’s reading — inspiring students to read deeply, think critically, talk openly, and write reflectively about topics that matter.

Testimonial  about P2R

Paula Summers
Principal
Gaithersburg Elementary School
"My staff and students were beyond thankful and thrilled with the books. They loved the entire experience. I can't thank you, the volunteers, and the donors enough for your care, thoughtfulness, and support of our students and families. Our students loved not only the books but wouldn't take off the backpacks! They were so excited. Some of them aren't used to getting books of their own to keep. It truly meant a lot!
Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Path 2 Reading (P2R)?

P2R is a 501c3 nonprofit based in  Maryland. We formed in 2022 to facilitate federally-mandated Supplemental Educational Services (SES) under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) for children at risk of academic failure within Montgomery County school system.

Where can we find your program?

Although P2R has specialized in SES, it has managed other programs, including: community learning center operations, and homework help in the Washington, DC metro area.

What age groups do you work with?

Since its inception, P2R has provided direct academic support to students in upper elementary  school (4th, 5th and 6th grades) to help close gaps in content knowledge in reading.

What is Social and Emotional Learning?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a skill-development process through which we learn how to manage emotions, problem solve, and create positive relationships with others.

Why 4th-6th grade readers?

Research shows that a child learns to read in grades PK-3rd grades. From the 4th grade on a child reads to learn. If a student is unable to make that important leap. Learning  can not happen.

What do P2R volunteers do?

Reading volunteers work with upper elementary school-aged students to promote the activity of reading, rather than focusing on reading skills. They read to and with small groups and facilitate discussions.
